Over the years horses have been used across the world for therapeutic purposes. Whether it is to increase self-esteem and self-confidence, deal with anger-management or communication skills, horses have proven themselves to be an effective asset in teaching such life changing skills.
Horses like to test our fuses. This lets them know what kind of human being they are dealing with.
Communication between horse and rider cannot be brought on by force, domination or from a passive rider that lacks discipline/guidelines for his/herself. Horses do not trust or respect undisciplined handlers. They respond better to people who are at ease with themselves.
The Equine-Assisted Self-Improvement Program offered by Relationship Riding© addresses these issues. This program is intended to be more than a simple physical activity or leisure activity. By empowering participants with life skills that will benefit their personal and professional lives, changes will occur in the way they think about themselves as well as how they work as individuals and in teams.
Benefits
♦ Success oriented challenges that increase the participant’s self-esteem.
♦ Increased attention span, self-confidence and trust.
♦ Horse related activities (including grooming, caring and bonding with horses) help achieve physical, emotional, educational, social and behavioural goals.
♦ Development of instincts and awareness by observing and attending to a horse. These skills are primary tools for handling horses safely.
♦ Development of awareness of self and others.
♦ Non-verbal communication between horse and rider forces the participants to find other ways of receiving and sending information.
♦ Horses being very sensitive to a person’s inner feelings, riders must act in good faith in order to get the desired response. You cannot pretend, lie or fake it with a horse.
♦ Small groups of participants at one time mean more one-on-one interaction with the facilitator.
♦ Participants are also welcome to take part in week-end retreats just for enjoyable, well deserved time-off from everyday pressure. There is always a certain amount of soul-searching and communing with nature as clients get in touch with their true selves, with the help of a caring equine by their side.
